Granada is a small, yet growing city with a population of approximately 270,000, of which 60,000 are university students. Throughout the University of Granada’s 470-year history, it has been a social and cultural influence on the city.
There are many important Moorish and Catholic architectural sites in Granada, including the cathedral and the Alhambra. The Alhambra has been a palace, a citadel, a fortress and home of the Nasrid Sultans. The first historical documents date from the 9th century; however, it was not until the arrival of the first king of the Nasrid Dynasty in the 13th century that the royal residence was established.
Granada is large enough to offer a cosmopolitan atmosphere with nightlife and attractions to rival larger cities, yet it is small enough to get around on foot, whether from the school to your apartment or from the shopping district to the Alhambra.
Rising above the city are the great snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada that dominate the southern coast of Spain. Snowboarding and skiing are popular during the winter months and bungee jumping and paragliding in the spring and summer.
Whether you’ve come looking for the fantastic food, culture, friendly people, temperate climate, stunning scenery, nightlife, peace or just a chance to start out afresh somewhere new and face a different kind of challenge in life, you can find it all here in Granada.
